highlights

  • This Explorer Safari visits four of northern Tanzania's best parks: Tarangire, Ngorongoro Crater, Serengeti, and Lake Manyara for some spectacular Land Cruiser wildlife viewing. Each park offers unique wildlife viewing. After enjoying elephants, and much more, you'll depart Tarangire for the famous Ngorongoro Crater. Lions, elephants, buffalo, wildebeest, zebra, and cheetah: the Crater has it all. Your time in Serengeti allows you to view the vast herds as they move in a rhythm that is millennia old. This is one of the last mass mammal migrations left on earth. Lastly, Lake Manyara offers wonderful primate and bird viewing in one of northern Tanzania's last forests. This is traditional safari wildlife viewing at its best

  • But then this journey takes a more active turn into the back country of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. Through our unique system of camp-to-camp hiking, we make steady progress across this amazing landscape. Walking at a comfortable pace (plenty of time to stop, rest, snack, and enjoy) you move from campsite to campsite through a remarkable landscape of extinct volcanoes, mist-shrouded forests, and grasslands teaming with wildlife. Plan on up to four hours on walking days. You carry just what you need for the day: binoculars, camera, water bottle. Everything else is carried in the Land Cruiser, which shadows you during the day, in case you change your mind and need a lift.

  • The Maasai of the Misigio area of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area are on the forefront of new and growing efforts at sustainable tourism. Local people control the way that tourism is introduced to their people and they control the dollars earned. The tribal elders have been using this revenue to support their primary school and for veterinary support for the clan's cattle herds. Outside visitors are rare in this region so you will be bathed in attention from your hosts.

  • Our English speaking Maasai guide acts as a diplomat and interpreter allowing you to experience daily life on Maasai tribal lands, as well as wildlife viewing on foot. Experiences range from hiking through the traditional lands under the protective watch of local Maasai warriors, visiting traditional homesteads to learn about the pastoral lifestyle of the Maasai, and visiting the tribal school. Along the way, visit remote villages where the Maasai pursue an ancient way of life in harmony with nature and wildlife. For centuries they have adapted to this vast and challenging landscape. Experience and participate in this complex and sometimes mysterious culture. Your English speaking guide is also fluent in the local languages, allowing for deeper insights into the people and their culture.

  • Accommodations vary with habitat. On hiking journeys you will have rugged yet comfortable wilderness camps with all the "necessities" including dome tents, warm beds, a dining tent, a shower tent, and a wholesome dinner and breakfast. Mid-safari in the Ngorongoro Crater you'll enjoy spacious safari tents with full beds. Most people find the Serengeti's Mbuzi Mawe camp to be surprisingly luxurious, especially so, given the wilderness setting. All camps are operated with detailed attention to environmental protection, community participation, and resource sustainability. Lastly, the Lake Manyara Serena Lodge offers you stunning views over the Rift Valley Landscape.

  • This is an ideal journey for the active traveler who prefers an in-depth and off-track journey.
