Wilderness safaris in Africa

We are committed to employing local people to the maximum extent possible. We select our guides for their knowledge of wildlife and birds, their ability to teach and for their gracious hospitality-their ability to make you feel at home in their home. Our guide to guest ratio is low: one guide for every four or five guests.

Wouldn't you think that you have the best job of all when you get to travel to the Serengeti, time and again? "Ammy" as he is known to us thinks so. Particularly because the Serengeti is his favorite game park in Tanzania.

Ammy has a way of making people feel comfortable, of making them stretch themselves and try new things. He wouldn't ever tell you that. He is too modest. But we will. These skills have developed over nine years of guiding Americans on safari. Ammy enjoys working with Americans as he finds them to be very reasonable people. "They say what they think and they tell you what they need."

Ammy is from the Meru tribe, a tribal group that settled at the base of Mt. Meru, just outside of Arusha, Tanzania in Usa River. His wife, Juliana, is also Meru. They take great pleasure in their young son, Richard, who is 6 years old and their daughter, Irene who is 2 years old. Richard attends pre-school in Usa River and his mother, a teacher herself, enjoys the stories he returns home with every day about what happened at school. Ammy and Juliana are both multi-lingual speaking fluent English, KiSwahili, and their local tribal language, Meru.

Ammy hopes that Americans leave Tanzania with a better understanding of his country so they can spread the word back in the United States. He is encouraged about his country's future and hopes that increases in tourism will continue to improve Tanzania's economy.

We are a small hands-on company specializing in East Africa. The Deeper Africa travel experience has evolved out of our deep love for Tanzania and Kenya. When you come with us, you are more than a tourist. You are received as a guest by outfitters, lodge and camp managers, tribal groups, and researchers. These are people who are highly regarded for their knowledge, celebrated for their commitment to Africa's future, and keenly appreciated for their warmth and charm.

Wil Smith and Karen Zulauf, ownersWil Smith and Karen Zulauf, owners

Wil Smith has been exploring wild and remote spaces for over 30 years. Karen's gift for research and management has been instrumental in developing their vision of travel as life experience. Together, Karen and Wil have developed an innovative approach based on their deep concern that "what is left of our wilderness paradise will soon be destroyed by an exploding and very hungry population," and their conviction that responsible tourism contributes to the economic value of wilderness and plays a vital role in its preservation.

Because we specialize in East Africa, we have developed contacts that enable us to give you privileged access to places you'd never find on your own.
