The Machame is for the hardy few:
regular runners or hikers who spend a fair amount of time up high (over 5,000
feet). Both of our routes are breathtaking and scenic, some say this one is a
bit more so. Those of you who have seen the "IMAX" film on Kilimanjaro will
recognize parts of this route, particularly the stunning Barranco Valley.
On the first day, rest from your air journey at the Aishi Hotel at the
Machame Gate. The Aishi is a quiet, rural place, where we will have a trip
briefing and a gear shake out. On day 2 we will drive up to the Machame Park
Gate and begin our climb with a seven hour hike through the tropical forest, to
our camp at 9,000 feet. On day 3, as we climb higher, the foliage gets shorter,
increasing our view of the magnificent African sky. Day 4 takes us to 14,000
feet in view of the icy reaches of our goal-we'll drop down to our camp in the
Barranco Valley. A scramble takes us to the peak of Lava Tower, just to look
down on all the world. Day 5 takes us to the breathless spectacle of the
mountains southern glacier. Then, on Day 6 the ultimate adventure begins: under
the cloak of midnight darkness, we begin our ascent to the summit and sunrise.
Day 7 completes the ascent, back to the land of luscious, breathable, air.
