Swahili Coast

Really Want to Be Off the Beaten Path?

Visit Lamu Island, Kenya.  There are no motorized vehicles on Lamu.  Transportation is by donkey and by boat.  Lamu is a small island surrounded by clean and open white sand beaches.  The town of Lamu is an ancient and well preserved Swahili town with narrow, busy streets with curio shops and fascinating nooks and crannies.  Despite its remote and quiet location, Lamu town has excellent, modern lodging.  It is also accessible by scheduled flights.  The airport on nearby Manda Island, a short ferry ride away, has regular flights to Nairobi.

More Upscale?
