Rwanda is rich in biodiversity. This land of a Thousand Hills is home to five of the eight volcanoes of the Virunga Mountains, and the largest protected rainforests in Africa, as well as its most ancient forests. Viewing can take in mountain gorillas, chimpanzees, thirteen different primate species, including vervet monkeys, golden monkeys, L’hoests, Red Tails, and Mangabeys, as well as large troops of black and white colobus. This is a top birding county with 670 different bird species within an area the size of Wales or Belgium. Rwanda is home to devoted and passionate conservationists, with a government that sees conservation tourism as a way forward for the country economically, so there is strong support for this emerging destination to prosper.
