Dear Deeper Africa,
I joined Deeper Africa on their first exploratory walking safari in the Serengeti. Camping and hiking in a wilderness section of the Serengeti, we left the throngs of tourists far behind and had the entire area just to ourselves.
At night, the roar and rumble of lions would make you move just a
little closer to the campfire. Our guide insisted that "the sound
carries; he's a kilometer away," but it seemed much closer, just beyond
the campfire light. One day we hiked up a creek bed following fresh lion tracks in the sand. We came upon a fresh kill. We moved back to a "safe" distance from the kill and waited patiently. Sure enough, two female lions crept out of the bush and resumed their meal. Hearts pounding, we watched the lions just a stone's throw away, until they had their fill and wandered away for an afternoon nap. Carefully, we crept back the way we had come.
To say the least, this was a true adventure. We wandered freely in the African bush, camped under the African sky, climbed hills, explored caves, and met up with baboons, buffalo, and giraffes.
