They came out of the forest even before we reached them. At Bwindi the line between forest and crop land is abrupt. On one step you are in a Ugandan crop field and on the next step all of Bwindi Impenetrable Forest lies ahead. The ranger motioned us forward slowly. We dropped our packs with our porters and proceeded forward, cameras in hand.

Two female gorillas just sauntered past us on the trail. They stopped next to a tree and began alternating between stripping away the bark and stuffing leaves in their mouths. The ranger motioned us forward again and we moved through dense brush with the trackers hacking a machete trail in front of us, trying to steady ourselves on the downward slope. Slow going.

Ahead in the clearing the silverback sat very still and majestic. One of the females in the family approached him and began grooming his arm. Just a typical day in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest.
