Dear Deeper Africa,
We spent five nights at Fundu Lagoon on Pemba Island last fall. It was, without a doubt, the best possible end to five weeks in Tanzania. Elegant but not fussy. The rooms were built to feel completely private. The staff was lovely and attentive; the food delicious; the ocean beautiful. You are taken a short distance to an uninhabited island to snorkel and dive.
Every request we made was remembered. One morning I asked for coffee at my bungalow and that night at dinner staff asked if I wanted coffee brought to my bungalow the following morning. I requested ice in my tea once and from then on the ice was always in my tea.
Prior to our trip to Pemba we went on safari. I chose a fly-in, fly-out safari in the Serengeti so we could maximize viewing time in this marvelous place. The Serengeti would be worth seeing even without the animals. The grass on the plains was greening so your gaze was across a lush, green carpet that seemed to go on forever. I've visited other reserves in Tanzania and I experienced the Serengeti wildlife as more wild. The vastness of land available made me feel that it was a more natural environment for the animals.
